Being The Rabbits, The Lost Thing, The Arrival and Tales From Outer Suburbia.
Authored and illustrated by Shaun Tan.
Read on 19 Apr 2009.

Shaun Tan is an Australian illustrator, primarily known for his depiction of the fantastical and quirky. I have been a fan of his art and writing ever since I first read The Rabbits. This is a combined Bookshelf post and review, because Tan’s books really can’t be reviewed without pictures. I had finally read Tales From Outer Suburbia from cover to cover, and also revisited all of Tan’s illustrated books in my library: The Rabbits, The Lost Thing, and The Arrival. (Apart from The Rabbits, which is written by John Marsden, Tan is author and illustrator.) So this is a overview of all of Tan’s books.

It’s been several months since the last Bookshelf. I went on a book-buying spree in early April, so instead of showing an existing book from my library, here is what I’ve recently acquired.

BTT: Storage

Booking Through ThursdayHow do you arrange your books on your shelves? Is it by author, by genre, or you just put it where it falls on?

I have one bookshelf, and my books are primarily organized by size. The bottom shelf has textbooks (and paperwork), lower shelves have the graphic novels and large hardcovers (they can’t go anywhere else), the highest shelves have trade paperbacks, mass-market paperbacks and smaller formats. In general books migrate upward, as smaller ones yield shelf space to the larger ones. Then my books are organized loosely by ‘theme’, e.g. series and authors are always together, non-fiction and books on Christian living have their sections; even library books have their own (short-term) nook, as do computer games. I don’t own many books, so I’ve never had a problem with not being able to find something!

It’s a bit old (new additions have been made since!), but here’s a collage of my bookshelf:

My Bookshelf

(Now, my music CD collection is a completely different story. That needs serious organizing…!)

Sometime in late 2006 or early-mid 2007, I was browsing through one of my favourite bookstores, Hill of Content, when I stumbled across a most fascinating little book: 365 Fish. The fish on the cover literally riveted my attention, for they were all incredibly lifelike illustrations. The inside was just like an Audubon Society field guide, but for fish, and all illustrated. I like looking at beautiful artwork, and this was the most stunning book. I was very tempted, but only bought it several months after this fact**.

Welcome to my Bookshelf! AKA: another excuse for Vega to blather about books. Every so often I’ll showcase a book from my library - some of them have come to me through interesting channels, some of them are special for particular reasons, some of them are just so lovely and nice to look at - nothing wrong with showing off a little eye-candy, right?

Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox (cover)

First showcase here is one of the more recent books I acquired, The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox by Barry Hughart, published by Subterranean Press.
